Hail Damage to a Motorhome in Slovenia: What Your Comprehensive Insurer Actually Pays

Hail is covered under partial cover and therefore under fully comprehensive too, so the dispute is almost never about whether you are covered. It is about how much — and on a sandwich-bodied motorhome assessed from photographs, the figure is systematically too low.

The hail picture in Slovenia

Two perils dominate and they are linked. Alpine hail through July and August, and flash flooding in the valleys when the same convective systems dump rainfall onto steep catchments. The Soča and its tributaries rise fast, and riverside pitches that are pleasant in the morning can be underwater by evening. Tree fall in the wooded valley sites is the third. The coastal strip behaves more like Italy than like the Alps.

Why the vehicle type changes the answer

A motorhome body is not a car body. Outer skin over an insulating core, no rigid substrate behind it, and in most constructions no access to the back of the panel. Paintless dent repair usually does not apply. Roof damage is invisible from the ground and is where the heaviest loading lands. Rooflights, solar panels and air conditioning shrouds fail independently of the panels around them and each is a separate line in the estimate.

The full method is set out in the guide to hail damage on motorhomes and caravans.

Where this happens in Slovenia

Slovenia is small, dense and geographically extreme for its size: Julian Alps and the Soča valley in the north-west, Bled and Bohinj in the Gorenjska lakes, thermal spa country in the east, and a short strip of Adriatic coast. German and Austrian traffic passes through it in volume on the way to Croatia and stops in it in growing numbers.

How it works here

  1. Send photographs and your location by WhatsApp. First response within 2 hours.
  2. Triage: is the vehicle safe to move, and what must be secured before it is touched.
  3. On-site inspection, normally 48-72 hours from instruction.
  4. Report in the language of the insurer handling the claim, with translated annexes.
  5. If the amount is disputed: expert determination under section 84 VVG.

Comprehensive cover rests on your contract rather than on anyone's liability. The insurer bears the cost of the assessor it appoints; an independently commissioned appraisal is, as a rule, commissioned and paid for by the policyholder. We quote a fixed price before any work begins. Detail on that is on who pays for the appraisal.
