Camping Switzerland: what we are dealing with

Switzerland carries fewer German motorhomes than Austria or Italy but the ones it carries stay longer and are worth more. Sites cluster around the Bernese Oberland, the Valais, Ticino on the southern side, and the lakes — Thun, Brienz, Lucerne, Geneva. Pitches are orderly, expensive and often at altitude.

What damages vehicles here, and when

Alpine hail is the leading cause, with a well-documented severe hail corridor running across the Swiss plateau and the pre-alpine belt. Storm and tree fall follow. Ticino adds Mediterranean-pattern autumn rainfall onto steep ground, which produces flash flooding of a severity the northern side does not see. The season is June to September with a July peak.

Distance and what it costs to move a vehicle

Geographically short — Munich to Interlaken is around 550 km, Stuttgart to Basel about 270 km — but the arithmetic here is dominated by something else entirely: Swiss repair labour rates are the highest in Europe by a wide margin. A repair that costs a given amount in Slovenia can cost twice that in the Bernese Oberland. That single factor tips the repair-or-repatriate decision toward transporting the vehicle home far more often than distance alone would suggest.

Practicalities

Switzerland is not in the EU, and that is the one genuinely different fact in this campaign. Bringing a vehicle in and taking it out is straightforward as a tourist; leaving it behind, scrapping it locally or selling it after a total loss is not, and carries customs and registration consequences that have to be handled deliberately. Swiss francs, a motorway vignette, and German, French or Italian depending on canton.
