Repair in Croatia or Transport Home? The Cost Comparison

Two figures decide it: what a competent local repair costs, and what it costs to move the vehicle home. Both are knowable before anything is committed. The mistake is deciding first and finding out afterwards.

Distance, and what it means from Croatia

This is the long-recovery country. Munich to Rovinj is around 700 km, to Split roughly 1 100 km, and island sites add a ferry crossing on top. A vehicle stranded on Krk or Hvar cannot simply be put on a truck — the recovery has to be timetabled around the ferry, and so does any repatriation. That single fact makes the repair-or-repatriate calculation sharper here than anywhere else, and makes doing it before the vehicle is moved worth real money.

Local repair capacity

EU member since 2013 and euro since 2023, so no customs complication and no currency conversion for a German policyholder. Croatian and Italian are the working languages in Istria, Croatian further south, with German widely spoken at tourist sites and less so in workshops. Motorhome repair capability is concentrated in Zagreb and Rijeka rather than on the coast, which is itself a factor in the decision.

Against local repair: cost at local rates, parts availability and lead time, and the weeks you spend without the vehicle. Against transport home: haulage at the distances above, a workshop that knows the make, and the option of a controlled repair. Cutting across both: whether the vehicle is safe to be driven at all — covered in roadworthiness after damage — and whether repair cost has already passed replacement value, which turns the whole question into total loss arithmetic.

Recovery and repatriation themselves normally fall to a breakdown or assistance policy, not to comprehensive cover. Two separate files, two separate providers.

Where we inspect before the decision is made

Croatia's camping is coastal and insular: Istria from Umag down to Pula, the Kvarner islands of Krk, Rab and Pag, and the Dalmatian chain running to Brač, Hvar and Korčula. Sites sit on rock and pine terraces directly above the sea. The setting is superb and it is also exposed on three fronts at once — wind, sun and salt.

Comprehensive cover rests on your contract rather than on anyone's liability. The insurer bears the cost of the assessor it appoints; an independently commissioned appraisal is, as a rule, commissioned and paid for by the policyholder.
