Camping Netherlands: what we are dealing with

The Netherlands is the highest-density camping country in this campaign and the one where the German visitor is closest to home. Zeeland and the North Holland dune coast, the Wadden islands, the Veluwe, and the Vechtdal in Overijssel carry very large numbers of German-registered vehicles, many of them on short and repeated visits rather than long single trips.

What damages vehicles here, and when

This is the one country here where hail is not the leading cause. The North Sea storm season from September through March is, and it is severe: sustained gales, gusts well above the force 8 threshold, and coastal sites with no shelter whatsoever. Awning losses dominate the claim mix by volume, structural wind damage by value. Dune and polder sites add water exposure. Summer hail occurs but it is secondary.

Distance and what it costs to move a vehicle

The shortest distances of all. The Ruhr to the Zeeland coast is around 250 km, the Dutch border is two hours from much of western Germany. Repatriation is cheap and quick, which means the repair-or-repatriate question rarely detains anyone — the answer is usually to bring the vehicle home. The Wadden islands are the exception, where a ferry stands between the vehicle and the mainland.

Practicalities

EU member, euro, no complications. Dutch is the working language with English near-universal and German widely spoken. The Dutch caravan and motorhome trade is large, well organised and technically strong — this is a country where local repair is genuinely competitive and worth pricing.

How it works here

  1. Send photographs and your location by WhatsApp. First response within 2 hours.
  2. Triage: is the vehicle safe to move, and what must be secured before it is touched.
  3. On-site inspection, normally 48-72 hours from instruction.
  4. Report in the language of the insurer handling the claim, with translated annexes.
  5. If the amount is disputed: expert determination under section 84 VVG.

Comprehensive cover rests on your contract rather than on anyone's liability. The insurer bears the cost of the assessor it appoints; an independently commissioned appraisal is, as a rule, commissioned and paid for by the policyholder. We quote a fixed price before any work begins. Detail on that is on who pays for the appraisal.
