Awning, Carrier and Accessory Damage: Where the Cover Limits Bite
Fitted accessories are generally covered, but almost always up to a sum limit written into your tariff rather than to full replacement value. On a well-equipped motorhome the accessories alone can exceed that limit, which is why they need to be valued individually rather than lumped into the body damage.
The gap nobody reads until it matters
A modern motorhome carries several thousand euros of equipment bolted to its outside: awning and cassette, bike carrier, satellite dome, solar array, air conditioning unit, rooflights, TV mast, reversing camera, levelling system. German motor tariffs cover this as fitted equipment or accessories — but typically only up to a stated sum, and that sum was set for an average vehicle rather than yours.
The practical consequence is straightforward and unwelcome: on a well-specified vehicle the accessory damage alone can exhaust the sublimit while the body damage is still being counted. Knowing the limit before the claim is filed changes how the claim is presented.
Why accessories must be valued line by line
Insurers frequently settle accessories with a generic allowance. That works against you in three specific situations, and they are common:
- Where the accessory is not the base specification. A wide-projection awning with wind sensors and LED lighting is not the entry-level cassette the generic figure assumes.
- Where replacement drags other work with it. An awning torn from the wall takes the mounting rail, the bonded fixing points and a section of the side wall with it. The awning is the cheap part.
- Where the item is discontinued. Older satellite domes, obsolete air conditioning shrouds and out-of-production rooflight sizes are replaced by adaptation, not by ordering the same part.
The individual items and what fails
Awning and cassette
Fabric perforated by hail, torn by wind, or contaminated by flood water. The cassette housing dents readily and a dented housing binds the roller. An awning extended when a storm arrived is normally a total loss along with its mounting.
Bike carrier
Rear-wall carriers transfer load into a bonded panel. Impact or overloading damage shows as movement at the mounting points long before the carrier itself fails, and the mounting repair is the expensive item. On theft claims the carrier and the bicycles are two separate questions with two separate answers.
Solar panels
Glass fracture is visible. Cell micro-cracking after hail is not, and presents as reduced output rather than as damage. Where panels were in an impact zone, output measurement belongs in the assessment — otherwise a real loss goes unrecorded.
Air conditioning and roof vents
Moulded plastic shrouds go brittle with UV exposure and shatter under hail that barely marks the roof beside them. Frequently the single largest accessory item in a hail claim.
Rooflights and skylights
Acrylic domes craze and crack. Age lowers the impact threshold sharply. A failed dome is also a water ingress route, which is why it belongs in the claim promptly rather than being deferred to the next service.
Satellite dome and TV mast
High-value, roof-mounted, exposed, and routinely omitted from photographs taken from the ground.
Cover
| Item | Typical treatment | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Awning, permanently fitted | Covered as fitted equipment | Sum limit; care question if extended in forecast wind |
| Solar panels, bonded or bolted | Covered as fitted equipment | Micro-cracking needs output testing, not inspection |
| Air conditioning, roof vents | Covered as fitted equipment | Discontinued shrouds; adaptation cost |
| Bike carrier, fitted | Covered as fitted equipment | Mounting damage exceeds carrier value |
| Bicycles on the carrier | Usually not the motor policy | Household or travel cover; often excluded outright |
| Loose equipment, camping furniture | Not the motor policy | Household contents cover |

What to do
Photograph every accessory separately, before removal and before repair, including the mounting points. Keep the damaged parts — a shattered dome and a torn awning are evidence. Find the accessory sum limit in your policy conditions before the claim is quantified, because it changes what is worth arguing about.

Frequently asked questions
Is my awning covered when wind destroys it?
Generally yes as fitted equipment, up to the sum limit stated in your tariff rather than to unlimited replacement value.
Are the bicycles on my carrier covered by the motor policy?
Usually not. Bicycles on an external carrier are commonly excluded from motor cover or limited to a low sum, and may instead sit under household or travel insurance.
How is hail damage to solar panels established?
Visible glass fracture by inspection; cell micro-cracking by output measurement, because it produces no visible damage but a real loss of yield.
The insurer offered one figure for all accessories. Is that normal?
It is common and it is where independent valuation most often changes the number, because a generic allowance does not reflect a specific specification or the mounting repairs that follow.
